History
During the late
13th century trade was firmly established between NAKHON SI THAMMARAT
and Southern India specially Ceylon (Sri Lanka). This resulted in
and "inter-marringe" between Indian merchants and locals. Many of
the merchants settled in the area of "Hat Sai Kaeo" (Beach of Crytal
Sand). This is now the area where the city's oldest Temple is located
(Wat Pra Mahathat). Local culture and beliefs stem from the infuences
of the relationships between the foreign merchants and locals, Artifacts
found in the area indicate that the province was probably the center
of Buddhism more than 1,700 years age during the Sivichaya period.
NAKHON SI THAMMARAT is rich both historically and culturally.
